Analysts + AI

A credit expert leads every file. AI is one of their tools.

A Credlab credit analyst, a professional who has spent their career in commercial credit, leads every file: the records, the references, the public record, the bank verification and the report itself. They work with a set of tools, AI among them, and everything those tools produce goes through the analyst before it goes anywhere, except the bank analysis, which is generated with AI from the Plaid data and labelled as such. Your credit manager decides.

A Credlab Report: recommended credit limit, how the company pays, and an analyst's risk assessment
The signed output: a Credlab Report, written and signed by a Credlab analyst.

Who does what

  • Our analyst leads. A Credlab credit analyst owns the file from the day it opens: they pull the registry records and legal filings, call the trade references and chase the ones that don't answer, read the bank verification, set the suggested limit and write the report.
  • AI assists. Along the way the analyst works with a set of tools. AI is one of them: it pulls the records together (the application, the references, the bank verification, the public record), drafts a first version of the written recommendation, and scores the risk with the weights your team controls. The analyst checks all of it against the record, adds what it missed, corrects what it got wrong, and signs the report as their own.
  • Your credit manager decides. The report lands in the file with the analyst's name on it. Approving, declining or setting terms is your call, routed to the people on your team who are allowed to make it.

Where AI helps the analyst

  • Drafting the recommendation. A first version of the write-up for the analyst to work from, grounded in the file's reports and references.
  • Scoring with weights you control. Trade references, reported trades, legal items, stability and bank verification, weighted your way and sanity-checked by a person.
  • Fraud screening. Every application is screened with AI for signs of fraud, and our analysts review anything it flags before it reaches approval.
  • The bank analysis. A written summary of up to 24 months of transactions, so nobody has to read them line by line. It is generated with AI and labelled as such; an analyst does not review it.
  • Answering questions inside the file. Ask about a customer's risk profile and get an answer from the data in that application.

Where it doesn't

AI never approves, declines, sets a limit or sends an outcome letter. It never contacts a reference or a customer. And apart from the bank analysis, which is labelled as AI-generated, nothing it produces reaches you without the analyst having read it. Credit managers are liable for the decisions they make; a number with no one behind it isn't much use to them, and we built the product on that.

Why a person, not just a model

Models are good at the first 80% of a file: assembling, summarizing, flagging. The last 20% is judgement, and judgement in commercial credit comes from having seen a thousand files like this one. An analyst notices that the reference who didn't answer is the company's largest supplier, that the lien is against a related company with a different name, that the bank deposits stopped matching the reported sales three months ago. Then they write it down, in plain English, and sign it.

Our analysts are in Toronto, and the company has been in commercial credit since 2001. See about Credlab.

Questions we get asked

Can we trust AI on credit decisions?

You don't have to, because it doesn't make any. A Credlab credit analyst leads every file and uses AI as one of their tools. Everything it produces goes through the analyst, except the bank analysis, which is generated with AI from the Plaid data and labelled as such. The analyst adds their own findings and signs off. Then your credit manager decides. The software never presses "approve."

What exactly does the AI do?

It does the reading and the assembling for the analyst: pulling the records on a file together, drafting the written recommendation, scoring the risk against the weights your team has set, and answering questions about a file from the data in it. Every one of those outputs goes to the analyst before it goes to you. It also screens every application for signs of fraud, and our analysts review anything it flags. It also writes the bank analysis from the Plaid data, which reaches you without analyst review and is labelled as AI-generated.

Who are the analysts?

Credit professionals employed by Credlab who have spent their careers in commercial credit. They run the file: chasing the references, reading the public record, working the tools, writing and signing the report. Think of them as the credit expert on your team, without adding headcount.

Is our data used to train AI models?

No. Our AI provider's commercial terms prohibit it from training its models on customer data.
